The Husafell Stone

Rivalling the Dinnie Stones as one of the most famous lifting stones in the world, the Húsafell Stone weighs 186kg (410lbs).

The stone was originally used as the gate to a sheep pen built by Reverend Snorri Björnsson in Iceland in the 18th century. Although it is almost always known as the Húsafell Stone, its actual name is Kvíahellan, meaning pen slab.

The original challenge has three stages:

1. Lift the stone onto the southern part of the northern opening into the fold.
2. Lift the stone onto a large stone in the northern wall of the pen, where Snorri’s name is engraved.
3. Finally, to achieve Fullsterkur status, the lifter must pick up and carry the stone around the sheep pen without putting it down. One full lap is approximately 35 metres (115ft).
